This Lake Bernard waterfront cottage - 'Red Dog Inn' - is located in the beautiful Almaquin Highlands, about a half an hour north of Huntsville. It is the perfect place to unwind and let big-city worries melt away!
Lake Bernard is claimed to be the world's largest freshwater lake without an island. The Almaquin region has an abundance of natural beauty and year round activities. It provides photographers and artists with endless inspiration. In the summer there is swimming, hiking, biking, horseback riding, boating and fishing. In the winter you can enjoy ice fishing, dog-sledding, snowmobiling, snowshoeing, and cross country skiing.
This 3 bedroom, 1900 square foot cottage provides spectacular views overlooking the sparkling waters of Lake Bernard.
The kitchen, dining and living rooms are all located on the main level of the cottage.
The kitchen has hardwood floors and a large window looking out to the lake. It is well equipped with a fridge, stove, oven, microwave, dishwasher and more. There is a door from the kitchen to an enclosed sunroom on the back of the cottage. A door from the sunroom takes you to the rear deck. The kitchen, sunroom and deck all offer great views of the lake.
The open floor plan dining and living room area features a high vaulted wood ceiling with exposed beams, plenty of bright windows and comfortable furniture. The dining table seats six. There is a door from the dining room to another enclosed sunroom on the front of the cottage which has a pullout couch. In the spacious living room there is full size couch, four cozy chairs, a 50" TV with satellite, a DVD player, and there is a woodstove. There is also a TV with X-box in the loft.
The main floor bathroom is a two-piece with sink and toilet with an adjoining washer and dryer for your laundry needs during your stay. There is one bedroom on the main level, and it has a double bed.
Take the open staircase from the living room to the upper level where there are two more bedrooms - one with a king bed and the other with a queen and a loft with a sleeping futon. On the upper level there is also a four-piece bathroom with combination tub/shower.
For those hot summer days there are air conditioning window units in each of the second level bedrooms as well as one on the main floor in the living area.
On the rear deck at the cottage there is a propane BBQ for your outdoor grilling, and a patio table with umbrella and plenty of chairs. There are also six loungers and Muskoka chairs for relaxing. The rear deck offers a great panorama view of the lake and is a great spot for catching some sun, socializing, relaxing with your book and/or favourite vacation beverage.
From the cottage it's just a short stroll to the sandy shoreline of Lake Bernard. The lake is very quiet and the water depth increases gradually making it ideal for children and non-swimmers to splash and play in the water. (Note: although the water is shallow, young children need to be supervised near any body of water). There is also a paddle boat and canoe for your enjoyment. Lake Bernard is a good fishing spot for trout and whitefish, as well as providing a beautiful place for ice fishing.
There is plenty to see and do in the area. The village of South River (20 minute drive) is the paddling entrance to Algonquin Park and Mikisew Provincial Park (30 minute drive) has three sandy beaches and numerous hiking trails. The villages of South River and Sundridge have farmers' markets offering a wide variety of fresh foods, related products and goods during the warmer months. Enjoy a round or two of golf at one of the local golf courses. Major stores can be found in Huntsville, as well as that community's historic downtown which offers a wide variety of shopping, dining, entertainment, arts & culture events and attractions.
