What to Do on a Rainy Day at Your Ontario Cottage

Imagine you wake up on your Ontario vacation, ready to take full advantage of the incredible surroundings and fun activities in the area. But then you look out the window only to discover that it’s pouring down rain! While this scenario would cause many travelers to crawl back into bed and call it quits for the whole day, you don’t have to! Even if the Bruce Peninsula weather is rainy, the area offers tons of fun indoor activities that are perfect for a rainy day when staying in our cottage rentals in Ontario.

Board Games

One classic rainy-day activity is a good board game. There’s nothing quite like getting competitive with your family in a long game of Monopoly, Battleship, or Risk. Of course, this category includes card games, too! Uno, Phase 10, and Go Fish are all excellent options that the whole family can learn to play.

Anything that can bring you and your family together is a win here. Just be sure everyone puts their phones away so you can be fully engaged and have the best time playing your games together.

Lighthouses

The Bruce Peninsula lighthouses are ideal activities for your rainy day in Ontario. There are several lighthouses throughout the area for you to explore, including Lions Head Lighthouse, Flowerpot Island Lighthouse, Knife Island Lighthouse, Cove Island Lighthouse, Big Tub Lighthouse, and Cabot Head Lighthouse. No matter which ones you choose to visit, you can get a taste of history and learn how important these structures have been to local sailors.

Museum

If you do want to leave your cottage, head to a museum in the Bruce Peninsula! The St. Edmunds & Peninsula Museum is a great choice. Housed in the 1898 Settlement School, this museum gives you a little taste of what life was truly like back then. This destination is perfect for having fun and learning at the same time, since you can tour the school and visit upstairs exhibits like the Bruce Trail 50th Anniversary display. Best of all, there is no admission charge, though donations are always accepted and appreciated.

Shopping

You can’t have a vacation without taking a little time for shopping! Luckily, shopping on the Bruce Peninsula is easy to do on a rainy day. Explore the shops downtown to find a souvenir to bring home with you or pick out a new outfit to wear when it stops raining. Josie’s of Wiarton sells both men’s and women’s clothes to give a fresh new feeling to your wardrobe, or if you’re looking for a new book to carry you through the rainy day, head into Berford Street Bookstore & Bazaar. Whether you’re looking for home décor, jewelry, artwork, or anything in between, you can find it along the Bruce Peninsula!

In addition to the incredible clothes you can find in the local shops, you’ve got the opportunity to find some amazing crafts, too! Many of the stores you’ll see on a visit to the Bruce Peninsula sell handmade items that will make the perfect addition to your home once your vacation is over. The Dandy Lion is a great example, since they offer up a little bit of everything.
